# **Marketplace Commission and Net Profit Calculation**

Shows how to calculate true net profit after marketplace commission, shipping, and VAT, and lists the hidden deductions sellers most often forget when pricing.

Daras Team28 August 20265 min read

Trying to figure out how much of a 500 TL (Turkish lira) sale you actually pocket, based on the sale price alone, is misleading — because commission, shipping, KDV (Türkiye's value-added tax), and sometimes additional service fees aren't all calculated on the sale price; each is calculated on a different base and deducted in sequence. This post walks through which line items to account for, and in what order, to calculate net profit correctly, and which ones sellers most often forget. We're not listing current commission rates here, because those rates vary by marketplace, by category, and sometimes by campaign period — always confirm the current rate from the relevant marketplace's seller panel.

## What determines marketplace commission?

The commission rate isn't a single fixed percentage: every marketplace applies a different commission by category (clothing and electronics, for example, sit at different rates), and these rates can be updated over time. Commission is usually calculated on the sale price including KDV, though some marketplaces may exclude the shipping fee from that base. That's why pricing off a single assumed "general commission rate" produces the wrong result — you need to check the current rate for each SKU's category.

If you sell the same product on more than one marketplace, the commission rate also varies channel to channel — a product that looks profitable on one marketplace can lose money on another because of a different commission structure. So instead of saying "product X is profitable," it's more accurate to say "product X is profitable on marketplace Y right now"; setting a price without regularly checking the category-based commission table means deciding without seeing your margin.

## What deductions exist besides commission?

The thing that damages sellers' profit calculations the most is thinking only about commission and forgetting everything else. Typically, these line items also get deducted from the sale amount or added separately as cost:

- **Shipping fee** — if you're using the marketplace's contracted carrier, this fee is usually deducted from the seller; if you're using your own shipping agreement, it's a separate cost line.
- **Service/transaction fee** — some marketplaces apply a fixed processing fee on top of commission.
- **Return shipping cost** — if a customer returns an item, the outbound shipping usually isn't refunded, and the return shipping is a separate cost on top of that.
- **Advertising/placement spend** — spend on featured placement or sponsored listings is optional but a common expense line.
- **KDV** — the KDV included in the sale price isn't money that stays in your pocket; it's a line item owed to the state.
- **Product cost (COGS)** — sourcing or production cost, packaging, and labeling cost if applicable.

## How does VAT factor into the net profit calculation?

The general KDV rates currently in force in Türkiye are 1% on some products such as basic food, 10% on many products, and a standard rate of 20%. If your sale price is shown KDV-inclusive, you need to strip out KDV first when calculating profit — otherwise you'll mistake this amount, which belongs to the state, for your own profit and price incorrectly. The practical rule: divide the KDV-inclusive sale price by (1 + the KDV rate) to get the net sale amount excluding KDV; evaluating commission and other deductions on this net amount is what shows you the real margin.

If you're not sure which KDV rate applies to a product category, fixing it per product and having it calculated automatically on every sale is far safer than calculating it by hand — especially if you sell products subject to different KDV rates in the same store.

## How does shipping cost affect the profit calculation?

Shipping cost eats into margin in one of two ways: either it's deducted directly from the seller, or the seller offers "free shipping" and quietly folds it into the sale price instead. In the second case, forgetting to factor shipping cost into pricing means losing money on every order without noticing. Always keep shipping as a separate line in your profit calculation, and remember that as weight/volumetric weight increases, this line item can become an even bigger expense than commission.

## A simple net profit formula

Lined up in order, the calculation runs like this:

1. Strip KDV out of the sale price → net sale amount excluding KDV.
2. Deduct the marketplace commission from this amount (always confirm the commission rate with the relevant marketplace).
3. Deduct any fixed service/transaction fee, if applicable.
4. Deduct shipping cost (if the seller covers it).
5. Deduct product cost (COGS).
6. What remains is that sale's gross net profit — spread indirect costs like return rate and advertising spend on top of this to arrive at the real net profit.

| Line item | Deducted from sale price, or a separate cost? |
| :--- | :--- |
| KDV | Stripped out of the sale price |
| Marketplace commission | Deducted from the KDV-excluded amount |
| Shipping | Separate cost if the seller covers it |
| Return shipping | Separate cost that only occurs on returned orders |
| Advertising/placement | Optional, periodic separate cost |
| Product cost | Separate cost (sourcing/production) |

## Which line items get forgotten most often?

**Return rate isn't factored in.** If a product category has a high return rate (size/color returns in clothing, for example), ignoring the return shipping cost and the risk that a returned product can't be resold makes that category's average margin look higher than it really is.

**Sellers don't check which amount commission is calculated on.** Whether it's KDV-inclusive or exclusive, whether shipping is included or not — this detail varies from marketplace to marketplace, and getting the assumption wrong throws off the whole profit calculation from the start.

**Fixed service/transaction fees get skipped.** A fixed fee that looks small can have an effect close to the commission rate itself on low-priced products.

**Advertising spend doesn't get folded into product cost.** If you use sponsored listings, treating that spend as part of that product's cost — rather than as a "marketing expense" separate from the sale — is what shows you the real margin.

## Frequently asked questions

**Where do I find the commission rate?** Every marketplace's seller panel has a current, category-based commission table; because these rates can change temporarily during campaign periods, checking them regularly is necessary.

**How should I manage the KDV rate per product?** If you have products subject to different KDV rates (food at 1%, standard products at 20%, for example), fixing the rate per product or category and having it calculated automatically is far more reliable than doing the math by hand at the point of sale.

**How does offering free shipping affect profit?** Free shipping is usually quietly folded into the sale price; if you don't track this cost as a separate expense line, you won't be able to see which orders are actually profitable.

**Should I sell the same product at the same price on every marketplace?** Not necessarily — some marketplaces enforce a price parity policy, others don't. If commission rate and shipping cost differ channel to channel, you may need to adjust the sale price per channel to preserve the same net margin; check the relevant marketplace's price parity rule before doing so.

**How often should I update my margin calculation?** Because commission rates, shipping tariffs, and KDV rates can all change over time, it's worth revisiting this calculation periodically — especially for low-margin products — for example, before a campaign or after a courier tariff update. Calculating margin once and never looking again can leave you unknowingly selling a product at a loss once the rates change.

## Where is this managed in Daras?

In Daras, you define KDV rates by region and product category from the **Tax Rules** page; the rate is applied automatically on every sale, with no manual calculation needed. Shipping cost, meanwhile, can be defined on the **Shipping Rates** page by courier × weight × cart range and matched to your real cost — so the two biggest line items in your profit calculation stay automatic and consistent.
